Daniel 9 Notes: God honors being in the word and prayer. Everyone individually and corporately stands in need of intercessory prayer. We are being held accountable to know prophecy. It’s time to take God’s word seriously!!
Daniel 9:1 In the first year of Darius the son of Ahasuerus, of the seed of the Medes, which was made king over the realm of the Chaldeans;
Darius was appointed by Cyrus as administrator of Babylon. The date of this chapter is, therefore, 537 B.C., one year before Cyrus permitted the Jews to return from exile and sixty-nine years after Daniel had been carried to Babylon. Knowing this date helps us to keep the historical facts of when this book was written, and the New Testament helps us to align the timelines:
Matthew 1:17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations.
Daniel 9:2 In the first year of his reign I Daniel understood by books the number of the years, whereof the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet, that he would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem.
Jeremiah predicted the duration of the Babylonian captivity:
Jeremiah 25:11 And this whole land shall be a desolation, and an astonishment; and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years.
Jeremiah 25:12 And it shall come to pass, when seventy years are accomplished, that I will punish the king of Babylon, and that nation, saith the LORD, for their iniquity, and the land of the Chaldeans, and will make it perpetual desolations.
Daniel realized that the seventy years of captivity were about to come to an end according to the prophecy in Jeremiah. But he also realized that there were many sinners who knew not what they were doing, so Daniel prayed an intercessory prayer in order to intercede for his people. Daniel’s response to prophecy was to pray for its fulfillment. Even though prophecy will be fulfilled weather we pray for it or not, God offers us a chance to be partakers. Prayer is God’s way of enlisting us in what he is doing.
Daniel 9:3 And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes:
Five important things:
- Prayer – Communication with God. Should be done often. Secretly and silently.
- Supplications – Petitioning and pleading for God’s mercy.
- Fasting – A spiritual bath. Goes with prayer.
- Sackcloth – For morning.
- Ashes – To purify.
~ Note: The word “LORD” is used thirty times in the book of Daniel.
~ Note: As Daniel prayed for a new beginning for his people, we should note that the word “pray” is used eight times in the book of Daniel.
~ Note: The word “truth” is used eight times in the book of Daniel.
Daniel 9:4 And I prayed unto the LORD my God, and made my confession, and said, O Lord, the great and dreadful God, keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love him, and to them that keep his commandments;
Daniel 9:5 We have sinned, and have committed iniquity, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, even by departing from thy precepts and from thy judgments:
Daniel 9:6 Neither have we hearkened unto thy servants the prophets, which spake in thy name to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, and to all the people of the land.
Daniel 9:7 O Lord, righteousness belongeth unto thee, but unto us confusion of faces, as at this day; to the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and unto all Israel, that are near, and that are far off, through all the countries whither thou hast driven them, because of their trespass that they have trespassed against thee.
Daniel 9:8 O Lord, to us belongeth confusion of face, to our kings, to our princes, and to our fathers, because we have sinned against thee.
Daniel 9:9 To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgivenesses, though we have rebelled against him;
Daniel 9:10 Neither have we obeyed the voice of the LORD our God, to walk in his laws, which he set before us by his servants the prophets.
Daniel 9:11 Yea, all Israel have transgressed thy law, even by departing, that they might not obey thy voice; therefore the curse is poured upon us, and the oath that is written in the law of Moses the servant of God, because we have sinned against him.
Daniel 9:12 And he hath confirmed his words, which he spake against us, and against our judges that judged us, by bringing upon us a great evil: for under the whole heaven hath not been done as hath been done upon Jerusalem.
Daniel 9:13 As it is written in the law of Moses, all this evil is come upon us: yet made we not our prayer before the LORD our God, that we might turn from our iniquities, and understand thy truth.
That we might turn from our iniquities, and understand thy truth.
Jeremiah 14:7 O LORD, though our iniquities testify against us, do thou it for thy name’s sake: for our backslidings are many; we have sinned against thee.
Daniel 9:14 Therefore hath the LORD watched upon the evil, and brought it upon us: for the LORD our God is righteous in all his works which he doeth: for we obeyed not his voice.
Daniel 9:15 And now, O Lord our God, that hast brought thy people forth out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand, and hast gotten thee renown, as at this day; we have sinned, we have done wickedly.
Daniel 9:16 O Lord, according to all thy righteousness, I beseech thee, let thine anger and thy fury be turned away from thy city Jerusalem, thy holy mountain: because for our sins, and for the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and thy people are become a reproach to all that are about us.
Daniel 9:17 Now therefore, O our God, hear the prayer of thy servant, and his supplications, and cause thy face to shine upon thy sanctuary that is desolate, for the Lord’s sake.
Desolate for the Lord’s sake refers to the Sabbath year that was never kept. The law given by Moses to keep the Sabbath year can be found in Leviticus 25.
Leviticus 25:2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye come into the land which I give you, then shall the land keep a sabbath unto the LORD.
Leviticus 25:3 Six years thou shalt sow thy field, and six years thou shalt prune thy vineyard, and gather in the fruit thereof;
Leviticus 25:4 But in the seventh year shall be a sabbath of rest unto the land, a sabbath for the LORD: thou shalt neither sow thy field, nor prune thy vineyard.
The Jews were responsible for giving the land a one year rest every seventh year. They were to plow the land every six years and give it rest every seven. For 490 years they did not keep that Sabbath year. According to this equation, they owed the Lord seventy years. This was linked to their sins. Nebuchadnezzar carried away the Jews to Babylon.
II Chronicles 36:20 And them that had escaped from the sword carried he away to Babylon; where they were servants to him and his sons until the reign of the kingdom of Persia:
II Chronicles 36:21 To fulfil the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed her sabbaths: for as long as she lay desolate she kept sabbath, to fulfil threescore and ten years.
Daniel 9:18 O my God, incline thine ear, and hear; open thine eyes, and behold our desolations, and the city which is called by thy name: for we do not present our supplications before thee for our righteousnesses, but for thy great mercies.
Daniel 9:19 O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive; O Lord, hearken and do; defer not, for thine own sake, O my God: for thy city and thy people are called by thy name.
Daniel 9:20 And whiles I was speaking, and praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before the LORD my God for the holy mountain of my God;
Daniel 9:21 Yea, whiles I was speaking in prayer, even the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, touched me about the time of the evening oblation.
ob•la•tion
Pronunciation: \ə-‘blā-shən, ō-\
Function: Noun
1. The act of contributing to the funds of a church or charity; “oblations for aid to the poor”.
2. The act of offering the bread and wine of the Eucharist. (‘yü-k(ə-)rəst)
There had not been an no evening oblation for over sixty-nine years because the temple was in ruins. This shows the dedication of Daniel to God.
~ Note: There are only three angels named in scripture. Gabriel, Michael, and Lucifer.
Daniel 9:22 And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, O Daniel, I am now come forth to give thee skill and understanding.
~ Note: The word “understanding” is used twelve times in the book of Daniel.
Daniel 9:23 At the beginning of thy supplications the commandment came forth, and I am come to show thee; for thou art greatly beloved: therefore understand the matter, and consider the vision.
Daniel 9:24 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.
Just like it is normal for us to use the word “decade” to mean ten years in the English language, it is normal to use the word, weeks, from the Hebrew [07620] shabuwa`, to mean a period of seven years. Just like it was used in Genesis 29.
Genesis 29:27 Fulfil her week, and we will give thee this also for the service which thou shalt serve with me yet seven other years.
Genesis 29:28 And Jacob did so, and fulfilled her week: and he gave him Rachel his daughter to wife also.
Daniel 9:24 refers to a period of seventy sets of seven. Seventy sevens = a week of years (A prophecy given to God’s chosen people.) Seventy weeks [of years, or 490 years] are decreed upon your people and upon your holy city Jerusalem to:
- finish the transgression
- make an end of sins
- make reconciliation for iniquity
- bring in everlasting righteousness
- seal up the vision and prophecy
- anoint the most Holy
Daniel 9:25 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.
Note: The Hebrew word; the Prince [05057] nagiyd, actually means ruler or King.
There will be seven ‘sevens’, and sixty-two ‘sevens’. Gabriel has given Daniel a mathematical prophecy. It has a beginning and an end and a period of time in between those two points. Seven and threescore and two = 7 + 62 = 69 weeks of years using a 360 day calendar year = 173880 days
March 14, 445 B.C. ~ The start date of the first seven weeks of years was when the commandment to restore and rebuild Jerusalem. Nehemiah chapter 2 dates that beginning.
Nehemiah 2:1 And it came to pass in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that wine was before him: and I took up the wine, and gave it unto the king. Now I had not been beforetime sad in his presence.
The prophecy of the announcement of the Messiah, the King:
Zechariah 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.
The prophecy fulfilled:
Luke 19:29 And it came to pass, when he was come nigh to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount called the mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples,
Luke 19:30 Saying, Go ye into the village over against you; in the which at your entering ye shall find a colt tied, whereon yet never man sat: loose him, and bring him hither.
Luke 19:31 And if any man ask you, Why do ye loose him? thus shall ye say unto him, Because the Lord hath need of him.
The praise given to Jesus by multitude who received Jesus as King.
Luke 19:37 And when he was come nigh, even now at the descent of the mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen;
Luke 19:38 Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest.
The Pharisees told Jesus to rebuke the multitude because to sing that psalm, Psalm 118, to Jesus would be blasphemy because it would declare Jesus to be Lord. Jesus then lets them know that He IS the Lord! Messiah the King.
Luke 19:39 And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples.
Luke 19:40 And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.
173880 days later. From the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the King. The event in Luke 19 was on the very day that Daniel 9:25 prophesied about. April 6, 32, A.D. which was the 10th of Nizon, The end date of the 173880 days. Four days later would be the 14th of Nizon in 32 A.D.. That would be Passover. The day that Jesus was crucified.
Luke 19:41 And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it,
Luke 19:42 Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes.
Jesus held the people accountable to recognize the time of the coming of Messiah the King. What will we not recognize if we do not study bible prophecy? Jesus predicted the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. No stone was left upon another because the Roman soldiers took the temple apart stone by stone in order to get the gold.
Luke 19:44 And shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation.
According to the prophecy of Daniel 173, 880 days would have to pass from March 14, 445 B.C. to April 6, 32 A.D. Now let’s do the math:
1. From March 14, 445 B.C. to April 6,32 A.D. would seem to be 477 years and 24 days; However, we must deduct One Year as there is only one year between 1 B.C. and 1 A.D. This means that we have 476 Years and 24 days. We now take 476 times 365 (our Julian Calendar) and we come up with 173, 740 days and add the 24 days and we have 173, 764.
2. Our Julian calendar has numerous peculiarities such as LEAP YEAR. We find that there were 119 LEAP YEARS (476 divided by 4 = 119) and thus must add 119: 173, 764 + 119 = 173,883 days This study is not intended to prove theory or this writer’s mathematical abilities. It is intended to show that the Book of Daniel, written SIX CENTURIES before Christ, was inspired and given to man by GOD.
3. This would seem to be THREE Days TOO MANY. Other people have calculated to this point and not progressed beyond it and claim that it “is close enough to prove Christ was the Messiah and that Daniel was a prophet.” They fail; However, in considering a little known fact of our Julian Calendar. Our years are actually 1 128th of a day TOO LONG and every 128 YEARS we must skip LEAP YEAR every 128 years!!! Therefore, we find that this skipping occurred three times (483 divided by 128 = 3+). NOW WE SUBTRACT THREE DAYS: 173, 883 – 3 = 173,880 DAY EXACTLY THE NUMBER OF DAYS PROPHESIED BY DANIEL!!!
The woman at the well knew scripture.
John 4:25 The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.
John 4:26 Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.
More dated facts in the bible:
Tiberius was appointed in 14A.D. so the 15th year of the reign of Tiberius was 29A.D. and Luke 19 takes place on the fourth Passover 29 A.D. making it 32 A.D.
Luke 3:1 Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene,
Luke 3:2 Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.
Jesus was resurrected on the 17th of Nizon, the exact date that Noah had his new beginning in the book of Genesis chapter 8. The calendar was changed in the book of Exodus when the Passover was introduced. The seventh month became the first month. This is more proof of the supernatural engineering of the bible.
Genesis 8:4 And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat.
Verse 26 and 27 deals with the remaining week. The 70th week. The end times.
Daniel 9:26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.
After the 62 weeks (the second half of the 69 weeks) means after the 69 weeks.
Daniel 9:27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.
Peter, James, John & Andrew received a private briefing about Jesus second coming:
Matthew 24:3 And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?
Matthew 24:4 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.
Matthew 24:5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.
Matthew 24:6 And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.
Matthew 24:7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.
Matthew 24:8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.
Matthew 24:9 Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name’s sake.
Matthew 24:10 And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.
Matthew 24:11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.
Matthew 24:12 And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.
Matthew 24:13 But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.
Matthew 24:14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.
Matthew 24:15 highlights the key to end times prophecy and refers back to the book of Daniel chapter 9:
Matthew 24:15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand: )
Matthew 24:16 Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains:
Matthew 24:17 Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house:
Matthew 24:18 Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes.
Matthew 24:19 And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days!
Matthew 24:20 But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day:
Matthew 24:21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.
