| The Book of Revelation | Chapter 01 |
Revelation 1:1 The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to show unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John:
Revelation – G602 ἀποκάλυψις apokalupsis ap-ok-al’-oop-sis
From G601; disclosure: – appearing, coming, lighten, manifestation, be revealed, revelation.
Numbers:
Revelation is used 12 times in scripture (all in New Testament). Twelve is a perfect number, signifying perfection of government, or of governmental perfection.
First mention:
| Romans 2:5 | But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God; |
| Romans 2:6 | Who will render to every man according to his deeds: |
| Romans 2:7 | To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life: |
| Romans 2:8 | But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath, |
| Romans 2:9 | Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile; |
| Romans 2:10 | But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile: |
| Romans 2:11 | For there is no respect of persons with God. |
Revelation 1:2 Who bare record of the word of God, and of the testimony of Jesus Christ, and of all things that he saw.
Revelation 1:3 Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.
Beatitude – any of the declarations made in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5:3-11) beginning in the Authorized Version “Blessed are”
Seven Beatitudes in The Book of Revelation
- Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear and keep those
things… (Rev 1:3).
- Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord (Rev 14:13).
- Blessed is he that watcheth and keepeth his garments (Rev 16:15).
- Blessed are they who are called unto the marriage supper of the
Lamb (Rev 19:9).
- Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection (Rev
20:6).
- Blessed is he that keepeth the words of the prophecy of this book
(Rev 22:7)
- Blessed are they that wash their robes (Rev 22:14).
The second promise:
| Revelation 22:18 | For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: |
Revelation 1:4 John to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace be unto you, and peace, from him which is, and which was, and which is to come; and from the seven Spirits which are before his throne;
The Seven Churches: “The Things That Are”
Why these seven churches? Sixty-three years after Pentecost over 100
churches existed. Why not Rome, Jerusalem, Antioch, Colossae, Philipi,
Galatia, Iconium, Lystra, Derbe, Miletus, Hierapolis, Troas, etc.? ["He that hath an ear..." 7X elsewhere]
1) Local: actual churches. Researched archaeologically by Sir Wm.
Ramsey…
2) Admonitory: “..churches”: all of them. Each message applies to
each, to some extent.
3) Homiletic: “He that hath an ear…” Applies to us.
4) Prophetic: In their particular order, they lay out the history of the
church. [They fill the gap implied in Daniel 9:26, and between Rev
12:5 and 6, etc.]
Revelation 1:5 And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,
Revelation 1:6 And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
There are only three people in scripture who were kings and priest:
Melchizedek “King of Righteousness.” – Genesis 14:18
Jesus – Ezekiel 26:7; Daniel 2:37 (King) Psalm 110, Hebrews 5:6, Hebrews 7:1
Us – I Peter 2:9 & Revelation 1:6
| Hebrews 5:6 | As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec. |
A seperation of the tribe of Judah and the tribe of Levi. There was a seperation of kings and priest.
Jesus’ tasks:
Intercession Heb 7:25
Cleansing us 1 Jn 1:9
Advocacy 1 Jn 2:1
Inspection Rev 2 & 3 [Largely ignored by
the church!]
Garments:
(ours) Used menstrual cloths Isa 64:6
(His) Clothed with light Ps 104:12
Girdle of righteousness Isa 11:5
Vesture dipped in blood Rev 19:13; Isa 63
Revelation 1:7 Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.
Revelation 1:8 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.
Alpha – Α
A al’-fah
Of Hebrew origin; the first letter of the alphabet: figuratively only (from its use as a numeral) the first
Omega – Ω
Ō o’-meg-ah
The last letter of the Greek alphabet, that is, (figuratively) the finality: – Omega.
Revelation 1:9 I John, who also am your brother, and companion in tribulation, and in the kingdom and patience of Jesus Christ, was in the isle that is called Patmos, for the word of God, and for the testimony of Jesus Christ.
Revelation 1:10 I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet,
“The Day of the Lord” – a key term in eschatology.
Sunday = “Lord’s Day”?
- Seventh Day ordained in Eden Gen 2
- Observed before the giving of the Law
- Did not gather manna on Shabbat Ex 16
- Law given at Mt. Sinai Ex 20
- Antichrist will seek “to change the
times and the laws” Dan 7:25
- “Do not move the ancient landmarks…”` Prov 22:28
- Millennial Temple only be open on
Shabbat and the new moon Ezek 46:1
Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an
holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: Which are a shadow
of things to come; but the body is of Christ.
Colossians 2:16-17
Rhyme about the changing of dates and times:
Lets cut to the chase and put the zodiac in it’s place
Horroscopes and signs, pagan gods deceivin’ a race
Now when you claim that you a Virgo, are you sure that you are?
Do you worship the constellations or the one who created the star?
Take months of the year – September is the 9th month but I’m driven
To inform you that the root word ‘Septo’ means seven
So how did it get to be number 9? somehow it don’t equate
How can October be the 10th month when ‘Octo’ means 8
Like an octopus or octogon – 8 legs and 8 sides
Artificial names invented through mythological lies
All named after so called pagan Gods in heaven
See ‘Nova’ means 9 but November’s month number 11
To the unfathomable abyss of knowledge I delve
D-E-C ‘Deca’ means 10 yet December’s month number 12
See before you try and test me I insist that you
Try to reasearch and see that your calendars been misconstrewed
See March was the 1st month, April used to be 2nd
May and June was 3 and 4 so now lets do some checkin’
See 2 months got removed – Quintilis and Sextilis
It’s time to get this knowledge now before the effects kill us
Quint meaning 5, Sex meaning 6 – it don’t stop either
They added July and August named after Julius and Augustus Caesar
Thats 5 and 6, September was 7, Octobers 8, November was 9 – now you see
it’s all back in line
December’s 10, January’s 11th so go report this
February was the 12th and the last month plus the shortest
Revelation 1:11 Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea.
Revelation 1:12 And I turned to see the voice that spake with me. And being turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks;
Candlesticks – G3087 λυχνία luchnia lookh-nee’-ah
A lamp stand (literally or figuratively): – candlestick.
Revelation 1:13 And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle.
Paps G3149 μαστός mastos mas-tos’ = breast
The priests were girded about the breasts, not the loins. We see Him here as our Great High Priest, in charge-and in control-of His Church.
Golden = Royalty
The word girdle is used 40 times in scripture. The number fourty in scripture is used in association with a period of probation, trial, and chastisement.
Revelation 1:14 His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire;
1) Hair, head: wool, snow Dan 7:9, 13, 22
2) Eyes: flame of fire too pure to behold evil Heb 1:13
all things naked Heb 4:13
work tried by fire 1 Cor 3:13
refiner’s fire Mal 3:2
Revelation 1:15 And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters.
Daniel’s vision:
| Daniel 10:2 | In those days I Daniel was mourning three full weeks. |
| Daniel 10:3 | I ate no pleasant bread, neither came flesh nor wine in my mouth, neither did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled. |
| Daniel 10:4 | And in the four and twentieth day of the first month, as I was by the side of the great river, which is Hiddekel; |
| Daniel 10:5 | Then I lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and behold a certain man clothed in linen, whose loins were girded with fine gold of Uphaz: |
| Daniel 10:6 | His body also was like the beryl, and his face as the appearance of lightning, and his eyes as lamps of fire, and his arms and his feet like in colour to polished brass, and the voice of his words like the voice of a multitude. |
| Daniel 10:7 | And I Daniel alone saw the vision: for the men that were with me saw not the vision; but a great quaking fell upon them, so that they fled to hide themselves. |
| Daniel 10:8 | Therefore I was left alone, and saw this great vision, and there remained no strength in me: for my comeliness was turned in me into corruption, and I retained no strength. |
Paul’s vision:
| Acts 22:6 | And it came to pass, that, as I made my journey, and was come nigh unto Damascus about noon, suddenly there shone from heaven a great light round about me. |
| Acts 22:7 | And I fell unto the ground, and heard a voice saying unto me, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? |
| Acts 22:8 | And I answered, Who art thou, Lord? And he said unto me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest. |
| Acts 22:9 | And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were afraid; but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me. |
Revelation 1:16 And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.
The word of God – Sharper than any twoedged sword.
| Hebrews 4:12 | For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. |
Revelation 1:17 And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last:
Revelation 1:18 I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.
Prophecy:
| Isaiah 22:20 | And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will call my servant Eliakim the son of Hilkiah: |
| Isaiah 22:21 | And I will clothe him with thy robe, and strengthen him with thy girdle, and I will commit thy government into his hand: and he shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to the house of Judah. |
| Isaiah 22:22 | And the key of the house of David will I lay upon his shoulder; so he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open. |
Eliakim = “God raises” or “God sets up”
Hilkiah = “my portion is Jehovah”
Revelation 1:19 Write the things which thou hast seen, and the things which are, and the things which shall be hereafter;
The Divine outline of the book.
Write the things which thou hast seen [The Vision of Christ, Chapter 1],
and the things which are [The Seven Churches, Chapters 2, 3], and the
things which shall be hereafter [That which follows after the Churches,
Chapters 4-22];
Revelation 1:19
“…hereafter,” “after these things” = meta tauta.
Revelation 1:20 The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches.
Seven Design Elements In Each of the Letters
- Name of the Church
- Title of Christ Chosen
- Commendation
- Concern
- Exhortation
- Promise to the Overcomer
- “He that hath an ear, hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”
Seven is the number of spiritual perfection. A number which, therefore, occupies so large a place in the works, and especially in the Word of God as being inspired by the Holy Spirit.
“Tares” Sown in Early Church
- Legalism: denial of Christ’s completed work.
- Gnosticism: denial of Christ’s humanity.
- Caesar worship: denial of Christ’s Lordship.
