Why Isaiah is divided 39/66, instead of evenly right down the middle; Because Isaiah is a miniature picture of the whole bible. Isaiah has 66 chapters and the bible has 66 books.
God validated His structure of 66 books in prophecy. Isaiah is a sign by which we could determine that we have the sum total of His written Word.
I wanted to make a note of this because; unfortunately there are very liberal scholars that want to make the case for two, or even more Isaiahs. The reason that they try to do this is because they want to deny that the second half of Isaiah is prophecy. Particularly chapters 44 and 45 that accurately prophesized about Persia’s destruction of Babylon before Babylon even took Israel into captivity, and God appointing Cyrus by name 100 years before this son of Cambyses was even born.
The Holy Spirit anticipates every heresy that ever arises, even the heresy of two Isaiahs that flared up sometime around 1775. Numerous times Jesus quoted from both sections of Isaiah and attributed them to Isaiah. For instance this passage quoted from Isaiah 6:9-10:
| Matthew 13:14 And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive: Matthew 13:15 For this people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. |
